Impatient to get started . . .
. . . so I'd like to ask about that note on P.6 of the users guide that says to "Make sure the phone is fully charged before turning device on."
1 - Will I really have to wait 4 hours?
2 - Does that orange LED on the phone turn green when the battery is fully charged?
There's my first post - sorry if they are dumb questions - thanks in advance for your answers.

Welcome to the forum
No to number one question, you van fire it up at anytime and yes to the second.
Heck if you just want to activate and play, assuming you got it online, just turn it on and use the esn on the receipt instead of pulling the battery to see it if need be but and activate it while charging. a call to *228, option 1 should be all you need to do. It will talk you through the rest of the activation

It seems to be standard in the User Guide for ANY piece of electronics with a rechargeable battery to tell folks to fully charge before first use. I've never known what problems would occur if you started using a device when only one-half or even one-third charged. I strongly suspect it would not matter, but have no hard evidence, just a vague recollection that my impatience to hit the ON button got the better of me too, once upon a time, and the world did not come to an end.
Yes the LED will turn green. Whether that means the battery is altogether charged may (possibly) be true. I use such indefinite phrasing on purpose, in the hope that it causes you to plow through this Forum for threads discussing batteries and the charging thereof -- to a surprisingly large extent, the question remains open and not firmly settled.

Thank you, jpr and mtnbkrmark - I've resisted joining the smartphone/app-phone community for a long time, afraid that I'd be so fascinated by the gadget that I wouldn't get any work done - but now here I am. Couldn't hold out any longer. Thanks for your replies - I guess I'll turn the durn thing on and be totally preoccupied for the next 48 - 72 hours.

agreed with mbm and jpr...
One thing I notice after I have bought a new mobile from the store they get it out of the box, install the battery and turn it on so they can activate it
I did ask about it once. The guy said yes it is a good idea to charge it asap because it would only last a few hours otherwise. He didn't mention it hurting the battery.

Since the days of nicad it hasn't been needed.
When I read "preoccupied for 48 to 72 hours" I literally laughed out loud. It takes about that long for it to truly become fun, then preoccupying you for the next week.
And then there is Angry Birds muhaha
