Have you rebooted the phone since the update? Try that.

Rebooted. Still can't see the silent option when pressing the on button. Only see "power off" / "airplane mode" / "restart".
I'll see if the battery lasts longer.

pauljoh I am having the exact same problem. It also now keeps giving me an error msg about connecting to a google account...when my gmail is connected and operating just fine.

I know there are apps to customize the volume/sound/vibrations but I just can't believe the quick one button press to turn the phone silent is now completely gone?

    Anyone?

You guys can try notification toggle app from the market. It puts short cuts in your top bar for whatever you want. Now as far as the battery life mine completely sucks after the update. I noticed that the boot up and down time is dramatically decreased but doesn't hold a charge worth anything. The only other thing I noticed is my phone does charge up quicker. The toggle will help you with your short cuts and works great.

    @jennykings,
The update process should be done step by step by your phone... I mean you will not update from 2.2 to 4.0.4 in one step... you go through all the other updates first... So it is safe to update up to HC... but when you see that the offered update is 4.0.4 do not go any further (read down why).

    @pauljoh
    ,
The things you listed are only part of the problems with the new ICS updated....
Just a quick answer to your problems:
    1. The battery is really faster drained than in HC... i had to remove my Live wallpaper, so the drainage is not that great, so if you have a live wallpaper just remove it
    2. You can easily change the profiles by using the Volume down(up) key. When you press the vol down key till the end, the phone will enter the vibrate mode. One "volume up" key press will make it enter in silent mode. The other possible options of using widgets is not that comfortable.

Now more about the problems i found with ICS...
I am terribly disappointed with HTC about this update(upgrade). They were one of the brands that cared about the quality of their updates/products, and now it seems they have become just as all the others on the market... Releasing buggy updates, because they are more after hunting new customers for their phones, and not caring about quality at all
    1. Battery drainage. This version is draining the battery almost triple times faster than the older HC... and it is a rough comparison as the apps that run are the same. Nothing much can be done except crippling the phone by limiting different actions, like putting the display brightness to lowest possible, turning off wifi, animations etc etc
    2. Missing power manager. It was a great piece of an app in HC, that put the phone into less power draining mode when the battery lowered to a certain percentage... All user controllable... Now this is missing!... I guess they want us to buy a similar app from the market, that is why they did remove it...
    3. Missing very convenient shortcuts in the taskbar, like turning on wifi with one click etc
    4. Missing convenient features and widgets.. like the battery widget, the fake call widget etc etc
    5. Missing "phone locate when stolen" integration with HTC Sense. This has gone long ago, as on their page HTC say one should buy/download a similar app from the market.... No comments on this.
    6. The phone becomes very slow acting (compared to the previous HTC android version - HC) at least twice slower, though i had reset the phone to factory defaults after the update. Now my phone is sluggish, unresponsive and i cannot rely on it. If you have this also, a factory reset will fix this a bit, but not that much to be like the older HC
    7. The new interface is very ugly IMHO... especially the bar at the bottom of the screens where one places the 4 application shortcuts. It takes useful space and is totally out of user's control
    8. One VERY ANNOYING bug. The screen goes blank randomly. It stops displaying anything, though the touches work and the phone is acting on the touches. Here is a better description of this bug:

The screen goes black (more like grayish) very often, the physical buttons at the bottom of the phone are glowing and though there is no picture on the screen, if one knows what is there on the screen and touches it etc, it works.
This happens very often after a call ends too.
It is reproducible, though it happens at random times:
    1. Lock(Sleep) the phone using the power button.
    2. Unlock(awake) it using the power button.
    3. Do this (1,2,1,2,1....) fast till the glitch appears.

It seems a glitch with the graphic card driver or something like this, since i've seen it on my Linux box with NVidia card and since nothing helps too:
    1. Turning off notifications of missed calls or messages for the lock screen is not helping
    2. Turning on "Force app to use GPU 2d rendering" is not helping
    3. Turning off applications bar for the lock screen is not helping
    4. Changing the type of the lock screen is not helping
    5. Turning off auto brightness is not helping

As i said when the screen goes this way (grayish with buttons working) the phone is actually working, but the display is not showing anything, so for example you can drag the ring in the lock screen from bottom to top, and thus unlock the phone (this is in case the bug appears/is tested, on the initial lock screen).
In order to fix the issue one should use the power button to turn off the screen and then turn it on.

There are a lot of other small bugs and glitches... So the whole update is totally disappointing...
I wrote to HTC tech support about all this and i am awaiting their answer.... Though i am sure they will just answer the usual stupid way...

So to all of you... my advice is: "If not too late, please do NOT update to ICS 4.0.4 !"

Go to Google Play store and download Easy Battery Saver from 2Easy. This app saves battery life better than Power Saver on previous OS's on the HTC itself. Choose Intelligent mode after install or tune it to your needs.
