Unsuccessful Root...
I've tried to Root now - 5 times; most recently using http://www.incredibleforum.com/forum...ed-3-32-a.html.
I'm an inveterate cook/baker. When I COOK, I experiment wildy; maybe adding chutney or cumin to a recipe which doesn't call for it. I occasionally take a couple of bites out of a jam and peanut butter sandwhich then throw the rest into the spaghetti sauce I'm making (and mix well) - the bread is a thickener, the fruit jam adds sweetness and taste, and the peanut butter is a good source of protein (as I learned from some West African friends who routinely add peanut butter to stews). But BAKING is a different story! Altering the ratio of wet/dry indredients or omitting baking powder would be a disaster. I equate ROOTING to BAKING; I (try to) follow the recipe precisely. Unfortunately, I haven't run across a single set of instructions yet which are accurate/complete (including the above: Step 1-6 says connect phone to PC; step 2-5 says connect phone to PC - with no intervening step suggesting that I DISCONNECT).
At any rate, I'm frozen at step 2-6, where my Device Manager reads "? - ADB" instead of "Android for ADB". Anyone out there have any suggestions? Bakers only - no suggestions from cooks, please.

I do not intend to sound negative... but I am not a baker nor do I equate baking to modifying a very expensive device.
You must follow directions exact in order to achieve root. I know the post that lists the instructions is large and intimidating but it really isn't difficult. The program Unrevoked makes it so people not familiar with ADB can achieve root without bricking their phone. To answer your question you need to reinstall the USB driver. Make sure you don't have HTC sync, doubletwist or any other app that would interfere with the phone communicating with the PC.

I'm not sure you read my post, but please take a look at the instructions yourself and then answer my question: how do I connect my phone twice to the PC? If I follow the instructions, I'd need to split a US cable and connect it to two different USB ports.

I'm not seeing what you are referring to, where does it say to connect the phone twice?

Twee or Razor can correct me if I'm wrong but you should be disconnected from the PC following "Step 1: INSTALLING DRIVERS" and before "Step 2: FLASHING THE unrEVOked 3.32 TOOL".
To Razor's point, does Device Manager look like the images found here: public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki] ?
And as a side point if I may, I read through your posts here and in other threads. I was a new hire trainer for over a year and most recently have led and am leading study groups to get people through Security+ Certifications at work. In my experience if you go into something with a negative attitude and expecting it to fail, then it will, in most cases, fail. While I do not want to say that your phone is affected by your attitude and causing the rooting to fail, it could defintiely be a small factor.
To go back to your analogy of Baking, I have a recipie for Pumpkin Rolls. The recipie tells me to preheat the oven, to grease the pan to combine the mixture, but nowhere does it tell me to place the mixture in the pan or place the pan into the oven or when or how to add the optional 1tsp of vanilla. There are always some implied steps in any recipie. I think in this case, discconnecting the USB is an implied step.
Hope this helps and I hope your experiences improve with your phone.

It is difficult to respond to a post without reading it. I did read your post. I guess I should have elaborated. When following a recipe the final product depends on the quality of the ingredients, how well the ingredients are measured and how well you follow the instructions. I would equate baking to say.... making a metal alloy. You have a recipe in both cases and the final product depends on the 3 factors above.
Rooting isn't like baking. There are no ingredients and there is no measuring. You aren't making anything, you are modifying software in the phone. It will either work or it won't. If you are asking when to disconnect the USB cable do it between steps 1 and 2 as Panz said

It seems you've taken the baking analogy too literally. My point (apparently too subtle) is that when risking turning a $200 phone into a brick, one needs to follow instructions (recipe) precisely, without adding one's own (dangerous) "assumptions". As I said in my post, I did NOT get the results as pictured,so I need to analyze where the problem might have occurred. My first impulse is to look at where I may have diverged from the instructions. Since the instructions never told me to disconnect the phone, my conclusion is that I should have when I didn't or shouldn't have when I did. I've been in IT for 30 years (now retired) - and reviewed a lot of design, code and documentation. A computer makes NO assumptions. If you don't tell the computer to put the pumpkin muffins in the oven, the computer leaves them on the table - uncooked.

Hello there! what parts are you getting hung up on? I have rooted/unrooted many times using that same set of directions you are using... maybe I can provide some insight to!

Thanks for offering.
I'm frozen at step 2-6, where my Device Manager reads "? - ADB" instead of "Android for ADB", at which point, when I run Unrevoked Flash, it simply sits there asking for my phone. Not sure why my Device Manager doesn't know that it's a droid. The phone is currently working (for what it's worth), so if I need to uninstall the drivers, I want to make sure that I don't brick it by attempting to do so blindly. That is, I don't want to delete the drivers without assuring that appropriate drivers (if needed) are put back in place.
Any help would be appreciated.
