First off what operating system are you using?
You probably need to repeat this step

- Uninstall HTC Sync, DoubleTwist, and DropBox from the PC. They can be reinstalled later if you desire, but for now they've got to go.
- Download and unzip the file (from the link above), leaving the folder Android USB Driver somewhere like on your desktop
- Unplug your phone from USB
- Power down your phone
- Now simultaneously press the volume DOWN button and the power button, holding till the HBOOT screen appears
- Now connect the USB cable between the phone and your PC
- The word HBOOT (blue box with white letters) will change to HBOOT USB PLUG
- Look at your Windows Device Manager (to open Device Manager, right click My Computer, select Manage..., select the Device Manager) and see if you already have Android Phone listed for HBOOT as shown in one of the images in the link below. If you see the Android Phone, you're ready to root and can skip the rest of this. Otherwise, you do not have HBOOT-capable drivers, and you need to install them. Windows should be looking for drivers now. At this point things may differ between XP and Vista/7.
In XP: the New Hardware Found Wizard should appear. Tell it NOT to use Windows Update, and moving along, tell it to look in a specified location. It will pop up a file open dialog. Navigate to the
Android USB Driver folder, click OK then click Next.
In Windows Vista/ Windows 7: You might not see the New Hardware Found Wizard. Open the Device Manager (Right click My Computer, select Manage, then select the Device Manager). You will see an Android Phone node in the tree with a "caution" icon node beneath it. Right click on the caution-marked node and select Update Driver. Select NOT to look in Windows Update; instead, choose
Install from a specified location. It will pop up a file open dialog. Navigate to the
Android USB Driver folder, click OK, then click Next.

Not sure why my Device Manager doesn't know that it's a droid. The phone is currently working (for what it's worth), so if I need to uninstall the drivers, I want to make sure that I don't brick it by attempting to do so blindly. That is, I don't want to delete the drivers without assuring that appropriate drivers (if needed) are put back in place.
Any help would be appreciated.
At this point, you're working with Windows and getting the drivers installed so that the PC will recognize the phone. Nothing is being pushed to the phone so there shouldn't be any worry about bricking the phone here. Follow what razor had posted to get the drivers installed.

- Same results. After installing the drivers, I get the desired result (bottom picture of public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]), "Android Phone" with "Android Bootloader Interface" below it. But on Step 2-6, when I reboot my phone and connect it, I DO NOT see "Android for ADB" in Device Manager, instead, the closest thing is: under "? Other devices", I see "? ADB". This is now the 6th time I've reached this point.

You are in the Hboot menu on the phone when you install the drivers correct?

Correct. I was in Hboot, disconnected when I saw Android in Device Manager, rebooted the phone back to normal, reconnected, and checked Device Manager which no longer lists Android.
-
Try with a different USB port.

That's fine. When the phone is booted in normal mode you may see "My HTC" under Android USB devices instead of "Android Bootloader interface".
- Boot your phone into normal mode.
- Connect the USB cable and select charge only.
- Start Unrevoked after you installed the driver to see if it sees your phone
If it does it will pop up with a box telling you it found your phone.
