Phone rebooted overnight and now half my apps don't work, and other strange things
So it seems overnight, my phone did something and rebooted itself, and now there are a host of problems.
I have a Droid Incredible, non-rooted, running the Verizon Official OTA. Baseband version 2.15.10.12.20, Kernel 2.6.35.13-g22d3486 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
The thing I noticed first is that my phone's background was different, and had been changed to the original background. When I unlocked it, I started getting messages that com.google.maps.app had crashed and needed to close. I'd click close, and that message would come up 3 or 4 times.
I noticed that the Google maps app and the Google Play store app don't appear as their usual icons, and instead have the little android dude and say com.google.maps... and com.google.play... as the names of the apps.
I also had a text message, and when I opened messages, all the messages are there, but it seems that it doesn't recognize any of the numbers, and my contacts list is empty.
I uninstalled the updates for google maps to see if that was the problem and rebooted. Now the maps icon appears correctly, and the app opens.
I looked through my apps list under settings, and it seems that yelp was also appearing as com.google.yelp instead of as an app, and I tried uninstalling it, but that didn't seem to do anything.
Looking under 'all apps' in the app menu, everything appears there as it should, but under settings>applications>all, there are several things that appear as a com.blah.blah instead of as an app name. Actually, my live wallpaper appears as com.blah.blah type thing instead of as an actual app.
Any thoughts of what to do about this problem would be greatly appreciated. I've rebooted numerous times but the problem persists. I think something updated and has screwed it up, but I'm not sure what it is, nor what to do about it.
Thanks.

Are you not syn'cd with Google?
-
I am synched with google, though I recently noticed that in my gmail app, it now says my account is no longer set up.
It's not the current loss of contacts that's bothering me, since I have those saved, it's that half of my phone seems to not work or has reset to factory conditions, while the other half works fine just the way I had set it up.
It's like when it rebooted, it only loaded half the programs, and everything that is supposed to load after google maps got left out.
Only thing is, I can't seem to figure out how to get it to go back to normal.

To top things off, the Google Play app is appearing as the android dude instead of the usual play icon... and it doesn't work, so I cant check to see what update hosed my phone...

How many of these apps or data from them are on your sd card? I think I would look in that direction next by making sure it's mounted and working correctly. Perhaps remove it, back everything on it up on a computer, format it, see if that helps.

That's a bit contradictory. Try setting up the account again -- hopefully you do recall the ID and the password that you used in the first place.
Then try to force syning, and see if anything gets restored.

Sounds like a corrupted partition somewhere. And since you are not rooted, there isn't much that you can do really other than a factory reset. Try what Mark and JPR had suggested, and if that doesn't work then factory reset your phone.

Well, between clearing app data and caches, most of the apps I have downloaded are functioning, and I was able to re-sync with my google account to get all my contacts reloaded. Most of my apps are on my SD card, and they are fine.
The google Play store still doesn't work no matter what I do, and there are at least three other apps that appear to be completely hosed. There are also several of the built in Verizon or HTC apps which appear in the app list in the settings menu, but say they take up 0KB of space, so I am not sure that they are working.
I think that there is something corrupted, and will probably have to factory reset (sigh). Unfortunately, one of the hosed apps appears to be the backup program I used to save all my messages, etc. Is there a way to back up my messages considering that it seems I can't download any new apps? (I've tried downloading an app using the google play store on my computer, but it never sends it to my phone)

Go to Amazon.com and download the app for the Amazon Appstore. Then download SMS Backup+ which will allow you to backup your SMS to your Gmail account.
