Questioning my root status and display issue
I rooted my brand new Incredible running Froyo two days ago and got the confirmations showing Superuser App and S-off. I never did Step 3 because I didn't know what a SKU was or how to tell what I have.
Today I learn about a utility called Rom Manager that does all this cool stuff so I install it and got a message about needing the ClockWorkMod, which it downloaded and installed for me. I then select "Backup Current Rom" and get an error: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" ...I believe that was what it said anyways. So I try it again. This time the phone reboots and all I get is a black screen with a thin white line running down the left and right margin. I have no key functions and nothing moves so I pull the battery and try powering on...same thing. "Oh no I bricked it!!" I finally hold the 'down' vol key and power and get the boot menu and can navigate that. I select 'recovery' and it boots into the same black screen with two white lines. I start pressing a combination of buttons and finally pressed the optical joystick and it magically came back to life...phew!
Tonight I finally get back to these forums and start looking at the Rooting stock 2.2 using unrEVOked 3.21 tutorial to see if I maybe didn't root my Incredible correctly. Then I look closely at Step 3 and see that it mentions using ROM Manager. I had/have my phone plugged into my PC and have Screencast running (which was the main reason I even bothered to root this thing since I wanted something similar to MyMobiler). Well, while I was connected I followed the instructions in the tutorial and got into HBOOT. Once in there I selected Recovery and pressed the power button. Suddenly it went into that same "black screen of death" with the two white lines. However, the Screencast display on my PC showed a menu! I was able to use the optical joystick to navigate the menu and even successfully backed up my device. All this time my device screen was still black with those two lines, however.
So my question is, why won't my device show the Recovery menu? I'm guessing that, when in HBOOT, and I select Recovery, it launches the ClockWorkMod utility and that's what not working properly?
Also, I went back into normal mode and launched Rom Manager and tried to "Fix Permissions" and keep getting "An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!" Is my phone not rooted correctly maybe?

Okay, deep breaths.
It's less of a problem than it first seems. You are rooted correctly. What happened is that the ClockWorkMod developer just pulled the last 2 versions of the software because of unforeseen conflicts. You can resolve the problem by doing the following:
Make sure your phone is still set to allow USB debugging. Unplug your phone from your computer. Download this file: http://dougpiston.com/files/Recovery...MG_cwm_mod.zip and extract it somewhere you will remember. Then start the UnrEVOked tool again and go to file and custom recovery. Select the recovery.img that you extracted. Then plug in phone (charge only) and let the tool run.
Voila- problem should be solved. If you have any problems, post again and we'll walk you through it.

For your privileged commands go into the superuser app, then long press the one that says rom manger and select forget. The go back into rom manager and the superuser app will ask for permission. Now select always.

Can you please check that zip file you posted for download? I get a 2k zip file and it won't extract.

Ok got the working zip file, thanks. Launched Unrevoked and loaded the image file. Plugged my phone in and Unrevoked didn't change/see the phone, so I relaunched the Unrevoked and it found the phone and started the process. Since I relaunched Unrevoked, will the new image file still be loaded?
Also, the phone has rebooted into normal mode and seems fine but Unrevoked's status is "waiting for reboot..." Does that mean it's done?

When you relaunched the tool did you select custom recovery image?
-
It wouldn't let me. The tool popped up a message that said it was about to root right after I launched it and all I had was an OK button. Once I clicked OK it went to town.

Ok, got the tool working...had to do this:
1. Launch Unrevoked
2. Load custom image file
3. Plug in phone
4. Turn off debugging
5. Turn on debugging
Tool started to run.

Ok, so it ran, with the image I downloaded. I saw the Triumph message flash on the utility and it rebooted. The tool is saying "Waiting for Reboot..." yet the phone is now back up in normal mode at the lock screen. Been sitting there for over 5 min. Is it done?
