gps navigation
so i have been using the google maps navigation and notice when i am directed to the destination it is always off. i know gps is turned on and all seems to be ok with the guidance. it always gets me close, within a block or two. i input places that i know how to get to so i can see if it is correct.
it will tell me to make a right and really i should make a left. i can even see the place im trying to get to but it turns me the wrong way.
i have tried businesses and residences with the same results. just though id add, i am not running the latest update of google maps/earth as i have heard people having problems with it.
thanks

All I can say is that it is still in beta. It is not perfect and probably never will be, but its pretty darn good and its free...

You need to update. There are no problems with it from anyone on these forums that i have seen. It might also just be the city you live in. Do you live in a small town or a big city?

good point about the small town. my town is small but i have also tried it in a large city with similar results. to be honest it works very well just up to the point of the last direction. it does get me close so i guess for now that is good enough for a cell phone. i will download the update and then try one of the destination that i have tried before and see if it changes once i get to last direction. ill let you know tomorrow how i make out.

Mine has never given me a wrong turn in the wrong direction. It did tell me something was on the right that was on the left the other day. Nothing turning my head and looking didn't fix.

Re: gps navigation
I thought mine was giving me wrong directions and telling me to take a right when I thought I should take a left. Well after taking a left then three rights to around the block the way I knew I found out there is now an access road where the navigation was telling me to go.
Once again, my Droid Inc has taught me something new.

So this might be a stupid question, ok yeah it is a stupid question. When we are talking about GPS and locational services on our cell phones, it is not actual GPS is it? Doesn't the phone just triangulate it's position off of cell phone tower signals or is it actually taping into the global positioning satellite network? Reason I ask is what happens to all our fancy tech when we are in a place (I think they still exist) where Verizon doesn't have service?

i think if you use the nav without having gps turned on it uses the cell towers to locate your location. i tried this today by having my gps off and it showing me in one location and then i turned gps on, it showed me in a different location close to with it off. the nav is more accurate with the gps turned on. i could be wrong but that is what i have experienced.

GPS is true GPS by satellites on this phone. At least that's always been my understanding.

Yes it is real GPS. If you try to navigate with it off the phone will make you turn it back on first. I don't think you can nav with out it on in any way.
