it only allow a change of password. Not the ability to remove the startup pasword. I know how to change. I am surprised that I need one to unlock the phone at startup or after a timed out?

You can disable from Settings -> Security.

I know you can set a pattern password when you first get into the phone (after turning it on or after it's been idle). But is there a way to change from a pattern to a written password? I'm getting tired of drawing the pattern every time I want to get into my phone.
