A piece of tissue paper, though not pretty to look at helps a lot.
Anything inside of 10'the flash is too much of a good thing for me. The sweet spot is about 15' and if you are trying to get just the person you can zoom in some while staying outside of the too bright zone.
Most experts say get in the sweet spot, don't zoom, and crop out the part you don't want but I've found zoom about half way doesn't affect a low light picture on the Inc enough to bother going that route. It's just not a good low light camera imo vs a decent standalone

what i did was... i took off the battery cover and taped a little piece of black electrical tape over one LED light, looks uniformed after the battery cover is back on.

I was having the same problem. Just discovered a brightness setting that worked great to take great pictures in low light. While in the Camera, click the arrow on the left side of screen. Tap the icon below the camera (looks like a sun) to adjust brightness. Try different settings until you get the best pic. Remember which direction you moved it for low light, so you don't have to experiment the next time.

Yes while in the camera there are a multitude of setting you can change, including turning the flash completely off. I think the incredible takes great pictures in daylight but with the autofocus at night it just uses waaaaay to much flash. Like one of the first posts said, it just isnt the best at night. It can take clear pictures in the daytime but cant take the best at night. Cant have the best of both worlds I suppose. If you tweak the settings a little bit and then take a test picture to see what it looks like, you should be able to find settings that allow for better night time picture taking. One last thing, if you are inside, just turn on a bunch of lights so the flash will not come on, just try to beat the autofocus.
