ROOT help!!! please!!!!
Ok, I need alot cleared up and would greatly appreciate if someone could lay this out for me in plain english.
I understand that rooting gives you administering capabilities for the phone...so you can erase pre-installed apps, wireless tether, better battery life etc...
But after reading tons of forums, youtube videos...i'm still lost!!
how do i root? what will this do for me? what are all these terms i always see, such as skyraider? cyanogen? unrevoked? -this is the most confusing part for me.
if this could be clarified for me, and possibly a link to necessary steps would be a HUGE help and i would be extremely grateful!!!
i have a stock incredible running 2.2

How do you root? Since you are running stock 2.2 you will need to wait a little bit although there is a beta out right now. Unrevoked is the group that does a great job helping us achieve root and prior to stock 2.2 it was unrevoked 3 (one click root). The recent update needs to be hacked, if you will, to allow root which is what the beta I just mentioned is all about.
What will rooting do for you? You already answered that in your second sentence.
What is skyraider etc? Skyraiders and cyanogen are custom roms that have been created. They may have a different theme/look, have most likely eliminated much of the bloatware for you, allow custom kernals and so on. You can read up on this by doing a search for each of them. Unrevoked I already mentioned above but you can also search on them to find out where the beta stands for rooting stock 2.2
Take some time a read up in the development sections. Try some searches and see what you come up with. Rooting is not for everyone since it technically does void your warranty and you could brick your phone although this is rare.

This is a great help, thank you!
I will look into this much more extensively before I root. Most likely wait until there is a one click root for 2.2

No hurry. Search, read, search read ;-) I am sure one click it not to far away (non beta)

I would also like the ability to root my Incredible which is running 2.2 so I could do a backup and try other ROM's
Since the OTA update, I've had a problem with unexpected shutdowns which lead to a boot loop.
I've been able to get passed that issue although it's a PITA.
The unexpected shutdowns seem to occur when accessing the internet, either via email or directly through the browser.
Any helpful thoughts?

I apologize, addition to previous message in thread.
Just read the sticky at top of HELP menu (I'm new to forums)
I was not rooted before and was running all stock prior to the OTA update to 2.2
I'm still running all stock Version 2.2

Here's a link to the beta unrevoked 3.2 that Mike was talking about. They're still working to fix some bugs but as of today some folks have had success.

Thanks Animal67. Download to desktop, copy to root and install that way. Right?

I rooted before the OTA so I havent used this tool. Just read through that thread thoroughly and see what other folks did. Join the XDA site...it has lots of info. Also, check out the IRC Chat link for this tool.

I used the beta of this tool the other day. It worked great. I have a linux laptop that didn't require any special drivers (unlike windows). This link was extremely helpful: Simple unrEVOked 3 rooting for stock Incredible or Evo on 2.2 - Android Forums
