I'm about to lose my mind

I'm trying to setup custom groups in my PC gmail contact lists in order to separate my regular/email only contacts with my phone contacts.

I've created a group called phone, and a group called people_i_dont_talk_to

What I WANT to accomplish (which I understand is easy on non SENSE phones at least with 2.1) is to select in my contact ahem PEOPLE application which gmail contact group I want as my default list. I don't want all of my contacts.. I don't want the aggregate of everything... I just want contacts grouped as Phone in gmail contacts.

Know what I mean? You'd think there'd be a detailed sync option where I could select which contact groups to sync or the like _somewhere_ but I'm at a lost to find it.

I went as far as to clear out and disable stupid verizon backup and even cleared out contacts data and re-synced, to no avail.

I'm running virtuous 2.5 froyo currently.
