How to sync your Phone (People) contacts with Gmail contacts
Used to be that I would enter a new contact on my phone and it would not sync up with my Gmail account. Totally frustrating! If I created a new contact in gmail on my home computer, it would sync down to my phone, but not the other way around.
Here's why: Google syncs Google contacts, not Phone contacts.
On your phone, when you create a new contact, select "Google" under "Contact type" just below the word "Information" right below the camera icon at the top of the screen. This is your one chance to assign this contact to either "Phone" or "Google," it seems it can't be reassigned later unless you export it and then import it into Google contacts as explained below.
To move all of your "Phone" contacts into your "Google" contacts:
I did something a little more circuitous, but this should work (you're a big boy/girl--you assume all risk if you do the following--I'm NOT an expert.)
Go into your "People" contacts on your phone, then "Menu," then "Import/Export." Select "Export" then you're given a choice of "Google" or "Phone." Select "Phone." Then confirm and export to your SD Card or phone storage. Then, "Menu," then "Import/Export." Select "Import" and then select "Google" and then Select "vcard file." This should now upload all your phone contacts into Google. Now that you're all synced up, remember to select "Google" when creating a new contact.
Reading cmb's post: Re: gmail contacts won't sync - DROID INCREDIBLE by HTC (Verizon) - Android Forums - HTC Community lead to my epiphany.

Is there an easy way to delete all the phone contacts?
