Is there a way to set a max number of SMS messages kept?

I did a search and couldn't find an answer anywhere.

Is there a setting for the phone to keep only, say, 200 messages in each thread?
I have several threads that are starting to take forever to load and rather than periodically deleting all messages in the thread I thought there would be an option to set the max number kept.

If there isn't a built-in setting for this is there an app out there that will?

Yes there is. Go into the conversation list for the messaging app. Then press menu. Then settings. Then check delete old messages. Choose the message limit. Done. Hope this helped.
