Home, Menu, Return, Search lights

The lights along the bottom of the Inc for the Home, etc functions does not work all the time. l can get them back if I hit the button on the top to shut the screen off and turn it back on. The lights are not there at all for certain apps and it is annoying. Is there something I need to do to keep this from happening?

They're light activated, I guess to save battery life. If you hold your thumb over the upper left front of the device (where the sensor is ) or move to a darker place the buttons should light up.
