Conference Calling

Anybody having trouble making a 3-way phone call? I am on my second phone (Incredible) and cannot get it to work via page 45 of the manual. I get the first phone call connected then Menu, add call and then I either dial or smart dial second party. I get a dial tone for 2 or 3 seconds, no Green Bar on the bottom of the screen to connect the second party just the Red Bar that says End Call. The screen shows the first party on hold and the second party with a green dot but the phone times out without connecting and I can't get back to the first party as the hold is still active. I've done factory reboots on both phones called tech support in Verizon and HTC. They keep sending me up the food chain to other smart guys with smart phones - some can make their Incredibles 3-way and others cannot. I am puzzled, stumped and just a tad frustrated! Any thoughts?

I just tried it, and works great ... dialed my home phone .... then <menu-add call> dialed the number, then <menu-merge>
