having issues scanning wifi

I am new to this and this phone is giving me trouble. I have read where others have the same problem, but the solutions may as well be in greek for me.... I am having trouble getting my wifi to scan and there is no service at my house, none... it first gives me an error message that asks me to force close or wait bc its not respondng, then after a few seconds it says unable to scan. please someone break it down for me like youre talking to a child because otherwise I think you'll lose me. Thanks to anyone and everyone who's willing to help.

Need more info from you. Incredible or Incredible 2? Have you rooted the phone?

don't know what rooted is.... but its an incredible
