Beginner needs help with creating a wifi hotspot
Hi. I was sent over here from droidforums.net, so hopefully someone here can help with my questions. I've tried to follow some of the existing threads on this site but unfortunately I'm a beginner and so I haven't understood most of the answers.
I have an HTC Incredible on a Verizon data plan. What I want to do is turn my phone into a wifi hotspot (so that my ipad and other wifi devices can connect to it). From what I've read, this is possible -- there's supposedly a free app called "Barnacle wifi tethering" that apparently can do it -- but the instructions say that the phone must first be "rooted", which I don't know how to do or really understand the risks. Even if I was able to root, I still don't really understand the Barnacle instructions for creating the wifi either.
As someone who is obviously pretty confused by what this all means, is anyone able to help with REALLY simple, step-by-step instructions starting from the very beginning as to how to create the wifi hotspot? (As I said, I've tried reading the other threads on this but just don't really understand the answers very well. There seems to be so much jargon to learn just to understand the answers.)
(Also, I don't know whether it matters, but I don't know if my HTC Incredible has the old operating system or if it's been updated to something apparently called "Froyo" , nor do I know how to find out or even whether it matters.)
Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hi July- have you accepted the latest OTA that Verizon has been pushing out over the past week or so? We can definitely help you get up and running with tethering but if you have the OTA it's going to have to wait a day or two until the solution to root the OTA is released by unrevoked. I'm sorry no one responded last night but we had a glitch in the spam filtering system and your post got caught in it. Should be fixed now.

Menu => Settings => About Phone => Software information.
The first item shown is Android version, You have either 2.1 (which was nicknamed Eclair) or 2.2 (Froyo).
What do you show for Build Number and Software number?

Not 100% certain, but I do recall that maybe 2 weeks ago something appeared on my phone asking if I wanted to do an update. I think I eventually ended up saying yes.

You do have the OTA then. Have to wait a bit until Unrevoked has a solution for rooting it. Shouldn't be long now.

New OTA updates?
Hi everyone,
Does anyone know how I will know when the unrevoked root tool will be updated for the most recent OTA update? Do they provide those updates there? I agreed to the update and am finding out through this and other forums (not to mention repeated trial and error) that it will not work on if I have accepted the new OTA.
I have also tried the app z4root and does not work either even though I do see the superuser icon.
Any tips?
THank you.

I have been using z4root for wireless tethering successfully. What exactly isn't working?
I simply installed z4root and superuser from the market. Wireless tethering for root users cannot be obtained from the market as the market version is not functional on the DINC. You'd need to get the latest "experimental" version found on the web site and get the file that Doug Piston provides here and follow the steps given for where to place it on your SD card.
Once you've got those 3 apps installed and the bin file in the right place, you should be able to open z4root, run the temp root option, and then start the wireless tether app. When you activate it for the first time, you should be asked to allow it super user permissions. Just click ok and you should be ready to go. It was literally that simple for me. Had no issues connecting my laptop to it with the Wireless Tether app entirely on the default settings.
Note that if you reboot your phone, you'll have to run z4root's temp root option again before you can tether again.
