rooting ?

I understand how to root the d inc on 2.3.4 but I have one that is flashed to the ntelos network and to get s off to flash roms is to downgrade the radio I believe to 2.2..would me doing that erase my flash that enables me to use ntelos or do I not root it at all. Thank you any help would be awsome I've been reading this for 2 days n still don't know if its safe
