i registered for this site just to post this. another potential cause is a service called slingnotify. it's relatively new, and airpush detector doesn't detect this. it is also a white star with a red circle in the middle.
instead of using astro, you can go into settings, applications, manage applications, and then the "running" tab will show running apps. if you see something you've downloaded that you haven't opened manually, chances are that it might be running a service that serves ads. clicking on an item will show you the services associated with that app, so you can make the right decision.

Just registered to thanks for the Airpush Detector suggestion. Installed and it flagged a free game, "Best TicTacToe". Uninstalled and no more spam. Looked at the reviews in the market, and many people are having a problem with this game since the last update.

Used to be the red star now it's a green cross. It says very generically that it's an update to the market. Seemed odd, but ok. Out then takes you to the internet, defiantly not a market update. The page it takes you to shows a market type icon and names your phone by model number. I Googled the address and out comes back to AppTram. I tried airpush to figure out which app is responsible, but no luck. I haven't really installed much new but several apps have updated so it could be almost anything.

Well I just downloaded it and its telling me the something APD did, but I don't have the notification in the bar. So I'll wait until it comes back. If I don't find it then I'll start uninstalling apps. Thanks for the tip.

I got one of those I believe from an application that had the soccer laws in it (I just became a ref so I figured that would be handy to have). When I uninstalled the app, no more spam in the notification bad.
Also around the same time my Dinc became unstable and froze up a lot and started rebooting, but I can't say for sure if the two were related or not.

Thanks for the informative thread. I just logged in looking for something about this because it just started happening to my phone too. Happy New Year everyone.

I recently started receiving all kinds of notifications. These different notifications I had no control of. They all share the very same thing, a white start with a red circle in the center. This star appears at the top left of the notification area.
When I checked them, I realized they were spam adds. I knew then that I had installed something that had that spam attached to but I did not what it was.
When I first looked, I found this web address and it was my first solution. Actually a good solution.
Chook, thank you for giving me a head start.
I then found a tiny App in the Market called AirPush Detector, I Installed that one and ran it and it detected all the Apps that had spam attached to them,
The App suggested me to uninstall the whole program to get rid of that spam, so I have.
One of the Apps that was on my smartphone that had spam, a program called Friends.
Thank you all.
I cannot thank you enough for your brilliant "Airppush Detector" advice! The daily spam was driving me nuts, now it's completely gone, you are a living legend in my book!
