If these phones had 4x the amount of battery life, I wouldn't use ATK. That is not the case though.
And for the person above who stated the ATK made their phone slower, go tell that to someone who doesn't know any better. You aren't supposed to leave that process running. It gives you the option to kill that process while you kill the others. Kill it too...
Just because you have the resources is not reason to let the system take care of managing tasks. That is actually a VERY BAD reason. Why? Well, as long as you have the resources, and we do with our 512MB RAM, you probably will never run enough apps to actually make the system need to kill any process off. There will be no need to free any resources. All those processes take up battery life. Those processes which are constantly transmitting data via WIFI or the 3G network or even satellite will really drain your battery life!
Actually, you're wrong. In Android, processes not running in the foreground are basically paused or in a standby mode. They use very minimal ram simply to remember their previous settings. It takes less battery-life to keep them in standby than opening your task killer and killing them.
If you do have an app that runs actively in the background and uses data, bluetooth, gps, etc. it probably has a "Quit" function built in so you don't need to use a task killer. I would also consider getting rid of them. There's really no reason for an inactive app to access the internet or gps and if one does it might not be doing so for a good reason.
I once thought like you. I gave it a chance, though. I stopped killing apps and guess what? My battery life did not go down. My phone didn't start to lag. Just give it a chance. I challenge you to uninstall your task killer, and go a week without it. You will not notice a difference in performance and save yourself the trouble of using the task killer.

I've been reading a lot of talk against task killers, but I've been using advanced autokiller for some days now and it normally shows available memory of 100-130 mbs, after I kill some running apps (calculator, people, some stupid stuff I opened but aren't using anymore but it just keeps running) I get to 160-200 free memory. And I gotta say, I DO see a difference before and after task killing when I'm playing any game.
Now, is it normal to have so litte free memory? What's good to have 748 Mb If the availabe space is (in my case) never above 500 MB (most I've had is 4xx) and free is 100-200 mb (sometimes less). Is it a problem? Is that affecting my gaming? I get lag on some gameloft games, but apparently that should never happen. I'm going insane!!! I want to throw myself and my incredible to a river

Yes it is normal.
You have to break the "Windows" mentality.
Less free memory on Windows = bad.
Less free memory on Android = good
