3G Mobile Hotspot, Free or Not?

I've looked everywhere, here, droidforums, Verizon.com, and I can't find anything. When I tried ot the mobile hotspot on my phone so my friend could user her laptop, I never got a prompt that I would be charged, just a page to set up a name & password.

So my question is, is it free, or will I get charged for using it without signing up for something.

I have the $30 unlimited data package if that makes a difference.

its gonna charge you, but there is ways around it. you gotta root your phone and install the .apk file.

3G mobile hot spot is an OPTIONAL service in addition to your data plan. If you use it they WILL charge you.

There are other options for tethering some don't require you to root, others do.

There is a way to use mobile hotspot without getting charged and you dont need to be rooted or use the wireless tether .apk, here it is: On the phone do ##778 goto edit mode enter 000000. Then go into the security settings change the S.IP DUN User name to yourvzwnumber@vzw3g.com, back out to the M.IP Default Profile and change your DUN NAI to yourvzwnumber@vwz3g.com hit menu and hit Commit Modifications. You should be good to go.

This doesn't work for me. Whenever I fire up the wifi hotspot after this config change, I cannot find any hotspot to which to connect. There are no other wifi base stations other than the one for my house where i live (no nearby neighbors) so there is no interference.

Does it still work for other people? I first tried after the november OTA update, so I thought it may be related to that.

What do you mean " go into the edit mode ". Also do I have to go back and put in the original settings when I am done. Heading 3G hot spot

I have to assume that this hack, which I heard about many months ago, is obsolete, since when I dial ##778, I get "Welcome to VZW -- your call cannot be completed as dialed."

It doesn't make it free, it is a bypass so Verizon can't track your usage.

This worked for me. I saved all of the information to switch back in case I need verizon service on my phone. just to clarify this uses the 3G data i already pay for? And verizon can not see where the data use is coming from, ie my iPad? No my phone? Thanks. Im a newbie so go easy on me.
