HTC Incredible Camera Lense

We all know that the HTC Incredible has a fantastic 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash. I was wondering why HTC would design a phone where the camera lense on the back would be protruding from the back. That makes it so that when you put the phone down on it's back, the camera lense will be in contact with the surface making it easy to scratch and making the phone unstable. Will the red paint around the camera scratch easily and will the lense also scratch easily since it is always touching the surface? Also, is the phone shaky when it is put down on it's back?

I thought the lens was flush with the back. As far as I can tell it is. The only time I've seen it protrude was in the leaked computer renders of it.

I believe they made the camera lens flush now due to the fact that it could potentially mess up the camera.

I've been looking at some photos of the HTC Incredible and the 360 degree view on the Verizon Wireless Website and it seems that the camera is jutting out of the back... This is probably also why the phone comes packaged with a piece of plastic covering the camera lense.
