Installation Aborted in Recovery

I am running MIUI had it for about a year now probably and been along time since Ive messed with all this, now i want cyanogenmod or synergy. I cant find where to download synergy so i have downloaded cyanmod, I go into recovery and go to install .zip and then i get 4 lines..

Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installation aborted.

Idk why it does this, ive even downloaded 2 different cyanmods 7 and 9 both do the same..

any help is appricated,

anyone know of any ideas that could be causing this?
I cant find anything anywhere else online
