I too had the nightly restarts. Here is what I did and my positive results:
1) I used Silent Boot to quiet the restarts during the night. Note that this application does not work with fast Boot enabled (under settings, applications).
2) I cleared the cache directory as documented for the second GB update:
a) Boot into recovery
b) Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option
c) When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power
d) When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
e) Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
f) When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
g) Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
h) Select "Reboot system now"
3) I freed memory. Even though you have a lot internal storage, you need both “phone memory” and “data storage.” This is the same method that I used to get the GB update/patch to install in the late fall.
a) Phone memory – I freed 375 MB
4) Data Storage – I freed 50 MB – My advice is to delete the data under Contact Storage, My contact storage had ballooned to 23 MB. It refreshed from my Google Contacts at just over 1 MB.
5) I used Bootlog Uptime to document that my phone is no longer restarting each night.
Once I cleared the cache directory and freed memory, I was done with the nightly reboots. I have been clear for two nights. I hope that I am not speaking too soon.
At first it seemed like my phone had updated perfectly. After the installation it rebooted and turned on. Everything was working. Then suddenly the touch screen would freeze up randomly. At night when I turned it off to charge, it would restart then freeze at the Droid eye animation which burned into my screen since it was there all night but eventually went away. I called Verizon, their solution was a factory reset. I did that and things were good for a few days. Last night suddenly its just been restarting randomly every time its left idle. I called Verizon again a few minutes ago and they're sending me a Droid Incredible 2 w/ extended battery totally free. They said even though I don't have warranty or insurance for a replacement, the software update which was out of my control is the reason for my problems. So in a few days I'll have an upgraded phone & hopefully this headache will be over.
I too have been suffering from the nightly reboots for the last three nights. I got the OTA update for 4.08.605.15 710RD a little more than a week ago, and everything seemed to be working fine (didn't have the memory issues during this installation that had appeared with the previous update a few months ago).
And my phone had been working fine since the update, until the last couple of days, where I'd been woken up at 2:00am by my phone continually shouting "Droid!" Each night, I've been running out of patience, and getting up and powering it off in frustration, so I'm sure that I haven't allowed it to complete whatever it is that it wants to do.
And worse, over the last couple of days, my phone has suddenly become really flaky... just hangs-up and crashes frequently, and sometimes gets caught in a reboot cycle. I've pulled the battery more times over the past couple of days than I have in the whole of the previous two years.
It still sounds suspicious that the phone requires these continual nightly reboot sequences as part of the update (and it would have been really nice if Verizon had actually thought to mention that this might happen in their release notes), but I'll let it go through a couple of nights and see what happens.
I've just installed both Silent Boot, and Bootlog Uptime, as recommended above, so hopefully this will make the process less painful and easier to track.
Thanks everyone for the information and tips so far!
So what is this update supposed to do? Every timme the update screen shows up and says it will reboot it doesn't do it. Any Ideas?
Well, it would be nice to try some of the suggestions here. But my Incredible just keeps rebooting and never gets beyone "Droid" , so I can not access the settings or anything else. Anyone have any ideas about how to get to the menu?
Upgraded unfortunately... 2 am reboots... for the past couple of weeks. Really sucks considering I work a very boring job... during nights. Thank you HTC for showing me your true colors now, before I upgrade.. as I will never again associate myself with your products and EXTREMELY poor software. My phone worked perfectly for the past 2 years, until now. It's a shame really. Just thought I'd express my displeasure somewhere that my pain is shared.
i dont think its htc that is at fault. Verizon is to blame for the stupid update. my incredible must prompt me about 50 times a day since the update was released and every time I click on "install later" to avoid all this bs...thanks verizon!
