gmail syncing

hi guys how do i go about making gmail sync on its own and also how do i change the frequency at which it does? if i go to gmail and make it manually sync, all is well but it seems thank it wont sync on its one and if it does its very hit or miss. pretty much does it maybe once a day if that.
i have a stock incredible with android 2.3.2
