gmail not auto syncing to phone

hi everyone, in the past i had my gmail synced to my phone every 5 mins using my gmail account and the gmail app on the phone. not sure what changed but now i have to manually sync it. im not rooted and im using the stock newest android sw. is there some settings in gmail itself on my computer i need to change? i was using the gmail "old look" for a while and all was good then. i switched to gmail "new look" and i cant be positive but i think thats when it started to not sync.
i switched back to the old look and still it wont sync. i have played with all the settings in the phone but no luck..

After i upgraded to gingerbread mine stopped syncing as well and it doesn't sync worth a flip on my new phone or Tab anymore either, starting about the same time. I changed nothing so I'm thinking it's a gmail problem

I agree. I just did a factory data reset for unrelated reasons, and immediately after logging into the Gmail app, I suddenly had 91 unread messages. I've never had any issues before.
