I've been using a pogoplug for a little while now and I'm pretty satisfied with it over all. Admittedly it has its quirks, and the long time it takes to transcode videos when you have a lot of them is a pain, but I'm pretty satisfied with the system and it's performance over 3G.
For the record, I've had it for two months now maybe, and I still have two months left approx. on the rest of the transcoding, though I am constantly adding to the database so it is much my fault as well.
If your files are in MP4 format, you can use my (free) MP4 Streaming Server App.
What is MP4 Streaming Server? | Tools4Movies, the official home of DVD Catalyst
It basically runs as a webserver on your computer without any configuration needed. (you can change the port it runs on, thats about it) You add your files to the application similar as you would in iTunes, and you just visit the IP of your computer on your phone's web browser. From there, you can play the files.

Update:
I just finished writing a (very) lengthy guide on how to stream your own movie collection for free.
I did my best to cover as much as possible, including tips on video quality, computer/router setup (if needed) and dynamic DNS.
