Do apps on the phone get updated by android market/appbrain/zedge.net automatically?

I'm new to the Android OS, and while I have the phone, it was delivered while I was out of town, and I'm coming home today, but I had a question that I did do a search for.

Do apps on the phone get updated by android market/appbrain/zedge.net automatically? Or do I have to manually update them somehow?

I did a search for "auto update apps" and nothing came up, so I'm sure someone can answer this question pretty quickly, as there are plenty of people who have had this phone for a while now, and some who ordered after me, who have theirs already... *insert sarcasm here* which of course makes me so mad!!!! In this day and age, Verizon should be able to anticipate everything, including when I'm going to be out of town. This just isn't fair!

Under Dinc.'s current Android operating system (2.1), you get notifications in the notifications bar that automatically pops up at the top of the home screen that there are updates availabl to your apps. You then tap on that notification and Android Market will guide you through the updates. It is very simple. I believe that under the just released (but not yet on the Dinc.) new Android system (2.2) you have the option of implementing updates automatically.

When there is an upgrade available for any application installed your phone will notify you.
You will then be promoted to either install or not. On 2.2 we will have the option to automatically update all applications without manually having to go the market.

Or you can just go to the market -> menu -> Downloads and it will show if there are any updates for the apps you have downloaded. The notification you get is not instant so you might just want to check on your own from time to time.

This is what i do lol. It very rarely notifies me before i'm in the Market anyways lol.
